Voice and video calling with Tango is free (for now, at least) and it works over both WiFi and 3G/4G networks. Of course, the video calling functionality only works if you have a front-facing camera on your device. If you do though, you’re in for a real treat because both the video and audio quality of Tango video calls are excellent, with less lag compared to similar applications.Tango includes a few handy extra features, such as the ability to add fun filters and animations to your video chats. You can even play games together during calls if you get bored!
Tango is a very good video chat app for Android, which makes it easier to maintain face-to-face contact with your family and friends.
Tango automatically sifts through your phone’s contacts to determine which of your contacts are using Tango (in much the same way as WhatsApp and Viber do), and displays all of these contacts very clearly so you can quickly start chatting with them. You get the option to invite someone via text message or email if you like.
The user interface is essentially the same for both the iOS and Android apps. There are icons for your contacts, invites, and settings. You can choose to have Tango search your phone’s address book and auto-populate your contact list with anyone that uses the app. You can also send invites out via e-mail or text message to anyone in your address book. Once you have found a contact that also uses Tango, you’re ready to make a call.
One feature that distinguishes Tango from the VoIP software out there is its ability to switch your call between voice and video at any point in your conversation. Since voice calls were generally much smoother than video calls, especially on weaker connections, this is a great option to have if you run into some network hiccups while on a video call, you can switch your call over to voice, and hopefully continue your conversation without further.
Should You Use Tango?
Unlike Skype or Fring, Tango doesn’t have any additional features. It doesn’t communicate with social networking sites to aggregate updates and it doesn’t support any sort of instant messaging. Tango is strictly designed for VoIP calls between the iPhone, iPod touch, and Android devices. With such a tight focus, I had high hopes that Tango would get video calls right and become a worthy competitor to Skype 3.0 or FaceTime. As it stands, Tango is more closely competing with Fring, but with less features.
Tango isn’t entirely without merit. Video calls can be fairly smooth if both parties are connecting from flawless access points. Video quality on calls often rivals that of Fring. And Tango is just so plain simple that even smartphone newbies can probably use it without much issue. So here’s to hoping that the developers iron out Tango’s video calling kinks and deliver an app that is both easy to use and delivers a good video call with its next version.
We also liked the app’s capability to switch between cameras, similar to Skype or FaceTime, but the images weren’t as crisp as during a FaceTime call. What is good, though, is that Tango is not limited to Wi-Fi connections; it can also use your 3G connection, which makes it very handy. Despite a few video and image issues, we highly recommend this app for its ease of use and its capability to cross platforms.
