One of the UI elements in Android L that was given the “Material Design” makeover was the stock keyboard. In case you were jealous of your Android-L-toting-Nexus-owning friends though, you can now have the Android L keyboard app on your device through a simple Play Store app install.
Anyone who was hoping for big changes to the Google Keyboard’s functionality is going to be disappointed with L. The performance and features are almost identical, but it looks a lot different. The app is a direct port from Android L, with no modifications to be found. You simply install it through the Play Store, go to Settings, click through Language & Input (or Keyboard, depending on the type of Android device you have), and change the color scheme in Advanced Settings to “Material.” Bam, you are now rocking Material Design.
If you want a little taste of Android L without the bugs and instability that come with Google’s preview releases, you can start by checking out its awesome new keyboard, which is now available on almost any Android-powered device running Ice Cream Sandwich or later.
A third-party developer has extracted the keyboard APK from an official Android L preview build and made it available to download from Google Play. It’s free, has no ads, and does not require root. Having used it a lot over the past few days, I can confirm it’s surprisingly stable. You’ll need to be running Android 4.0 and above in order for the keyboard to function. The keyboard functions just as it will when Android L is released later this year. After installing the app, follow the prompts to set it as your default keyboard. It’s that easy.
Android L comes with a new version of Google Keyboard, complete with a flatter looking theme — giving it a very modern and sleek look. The keyboard was also present in the Android L factory images released yesterday for the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 as well.
If you are not running Android L on your Nexus or other Android device, you can still get your hands on the new keyboard included in Android L, thanks to the hard work of developer be junk.
