The latest version of ROM Installer 220.127.116.11 is updated on July 31, 2014. If you’re a frequent ROM flasher, then you already know the tools of the trade – ROM Manager, ClockworkMod Recovery, TWRP, Goo Manager, etc. – but now it’s time to add another to the list: ROM Installer from JRummy. If you’re not familiar with Rummy, he’s been putting out top-notch apps for root users since the OG Droid days. He’s responsible for killer tools like ROM Toolbox and Root Browser, among many others. But I digress – let’s talk about ROM Installer. Basically, this is an easy way to find and install new ROMs, much like ROM Manager. According to the Play Store listing, “ROM Installer has the most ROMs available in any app you will find on the Google Play Store,” so of course you’ll find all the big names there: CyanogenMod, AOKP, Paranoid Android, MIUI, Carbon, and many others – perhaps some you’ve never even heard of. Naturally, certain devices will have more options than others, simply because there’s more support.
Aside from making easy work of ROM installation, ROM Installer can also keep your recovery updated (be it ClockworkMod or TWRP), create and restore Nandroid backups, extract files from Nandroid backups, flash multiple zips in tandem, notify you of new updates to your ROM, and it even has built-in access to Goo Manager. During its beta period, ROM Installer is free. Once it exits beta, a premium license will be needed to access some of its features. Head below to check it out, and join the Google+ community to be a part of the beta program.
If you’ve ever used ROM Manager by ClockworkMod, you know the basics of this: ROM Installer is an application that checks a repository of ROMs that are available for your device, and it can even download and install them for you. ROM Installer adds features beyond those found in ROM Manager, such as the ability to flash font packs, Google Apps, and Superuser; along with a bunch of ROM Extras that include ROM Toolbox, a Busybox installer, Goo Manager, Root Browser, ZIPme, WiFi Tether for Root Users, BBQScreen, SuperSU, an ad blocker hosts file, and several different boot animations. It can also download and flash updated or older versions of your custom recovery. This is an amazing collection of tools, tweaks, and ROMs in one location. But unfortunately, much like ROM Manager, the ROM selection is extremely limited and outdated (at least on the ROMs I can check). The HTC EVO 4G LTE section has five options listed, with two of them being premium features, and the remaining ROMs include a version of Stock With Goodies that’s based on an OTA that was released in August of last year. Additionally, the Avatar ROM listed hasn’t been updated in a month.
That shouldn’t detract from the tool though, as it’s amazing in and of itself; even without a ROM to flash, it should serve to encourage the EVO ROM development communities to get their ROMs listed. Or perhaps the developer can issue a warning on devices with outdated old ROMs. I do wonder whether MIUI or CyanogenMod agreed to let their names be linked to a feature that costs users money, but I’ve wondered the same with ClockworkMod’s ROM Manager also. I guess it’s just charging for the service of installing those ROMs, but considering all of them are free, it seems weird to single them out. ROM Installer is free for almost all of the features as far as I can tell. The only charge comes when you want to download a premium ROM or get the Nandroid Extractor functionality. The price tiers listed break down into $1.50 to remove ads, $2.99 for that plus premium ROMs and OTA updates, and $4.99 to add the Nandroid Extractor.
ROM Installer, by JRummy Apps, is the best way to find and install custom ROMs and ZIPs. It is a must have app for any root user. You will find more ROMs available in ROM Installer than any other app on the Google Play Store. It has many of the same features that you will find in Goo Manager, ROM Manager, ZipInstaller, Flashify and other similar products.
